Safer Surfing – That’s WOT it’s About

June 24th, 2010 Bob View Comments

WOT logoSafer web surfing for yourself or your family is one of those things that we don’t often think about. But when a simple way of separating the good guys from the bad guys comes along, I think it’s important that you at least know about it. And if you choose to use it, so much the better.

That’s where the Web of Trust (WOT) comes in. WOT is a community rating service, whose members rate websites on trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and child safety. When a web surfer with the WOT application installed as a Firefox extension, a Google Chrome add-on, an application for Internet Explorer and as a bookmarklet for Safari and Opera comes to a website, they can clearly see whether it is rated well or poorly.

Once you’ve installed the WOT add-on into your browser, you’ll see a “donut” shaped WOT icon in your browser toolbar (a bookmark that opens a popup in Safari or Opera). When you visit a website the “donut” will be gree, yellow or red depending on the rating given to the site by the WOT community. It casn also be gray with a question mark if there are not enough reviews. If you haven’t rated the site yourself, there will be a gold star superimposed on the “donut.”

Other WOT features allow you to block access to certain websites, for instance blocking sites with a red rating for child safety.

When you search using Google, the WOT donut will appear next to each of the results of your search enabling you to spot dangerous websites before you click on their link.

WOT ratings in Google search results

You can get the WOT add-on by visiting the WOT download page. It will open in a new tab/window. If you install it, after you finish, close the tab and come back and rate us. If you have a website of your own, send us the url and we’ll rate you. Heck, we might even publish the URLs of clients and readers and we can all get rated – and build up some good karma as members of the WOT community.

Have a look around the WOT websites and familiarize yourself with the features of Web of Trust.

Then place your website’s URL in the comments below and ask readers of this post to rate your site(s).

If you are an Orange Cat client, I’ve probably already rated your site. If you still have a gray “donut” with a question mark, you just need a few more folks to rate you.

You can return the favor by rating this site and my sites at OrangeCat.com, OrangeCat.net and MHMSM.com.

HubPages drives traffic to YOUR Website

February 11th, 2009 Bob View Comments

HubPages is a social media type of website. On HubPages, you can submit content in article, web page or sales letter format with links to your web pages, online listings, catalogs, affiliate programs, etc. And those pages, or “hubs,” can drive lots of highly qualified traffic your way.

HubPages has proven to be very effective at driving targeted traffic to websites of all categories. And it’s the “targeted” traffic that is the key. It’s not hard to drive non-targeted traffic – just expensive and frustrating.

On this blog, we’ve discussed ways of finding and attracting traffic of a more targeted nature before. Targeted traffic converts at a much higher rate, but where do you find it?

The web surfers who visit HubPages tend to be looking for something specific. It’s something like using long-tailed keywords in Google AdWords, but a whole lot less costly.

OrangeCat.com and HowDoIDoThatVideos.com today released the HubPages Traffic Video Tutorial – 11 videos that show you exactly how to take advantage of the HubPages site to drive qualified traffic to YOUR web pages.

Need more traffic? Don’t want to pay through the nose to get it? This video series will show you how HubPages can make an enormous difference in your website traffic.

For more information on what using HubPages can do for you, visit the HubPages Traffic Video Tutorial Series website.

I’m not drivin’ all the way out there

Have you ever had to meet someone halfway between here and there?

If you have, you’ll be happy to know that there’s now a way to find a place to meet in the middle. Restaurant, coffee shop, golf course, bar, hotel, mall, theater and more. Just type in the addresses of the two starting points, pick what type of place you’d like to meet and click the “Find a Place to Meet” button.

The website is MeetInBetween.us and it lets you tweak the results if you aren’t satisfied with what the software comes up with. I tried a few different points of origin I was familiar with and it came up with some good possibilities although I had to tweak the results both times.

I put together a little video to show you how it works.

Meet In Between Us Video

You can also use the website to find the halfway point of any trip you are taking. Just enter the starting point and the destination address and let the software do the work.

So, the next time you have to meet someone somewhere in between, give MeetInBetween.us a try. Like all things dependent on mapping technology, the results will get better and better over time until you won’t know what you did without it.

Free Polls for Your Blog or Website

January 1st, 2009 Bob View Comments

Now that WordPress 2.7 has been released, work on the 2.8 version has begun. The folks at WordPress.org have asked for input on what users would most like to see in the upcoming upgrade (you can participate in the survey here).

What do your customers really want? You can use polls and surveys to find out.

The folks at Automattic have created PollDaddy.com to help users create polls and surveys that you can then place on your blog, website or link to from an email. A simple interface walks you through the process of creating your poll or survey. There are 19 themes that you can use or you can use the built-in tool that helps you create a custom theme.

Once you have your poll set up, PollDaddy offers several ways for you to publish it. A simple JavaScript snippet can be placed on your web page by you or your web designer, and there’s a direct link method to include in emails. There’s a WordPress plugin for your blog and a MySpace app let’s you easily insert your survey into your MySpace profile.

In addition to the free version of PollDaddy, there are two premium versions for those who require more power and features.

We created the poll below using the free PollDaddy app. It’s a live poll so pick and click for an example of how PollDaddy works. You can then sign up for your free PollDaddy account.
